Welcome to Year 4 Voles

Summer Term

Hope you all had a very exciting Easter Holidays!

 

Important Reminders:

  • P.E.

    Every Thursday we have P.E. and Outdoor education. EVERY child needs to come into school wearing their PE Kit and bring their FULL school uniform to change into.

     

  • Swimming

    Every Friday Year 4’s go swimming! Children need to bring their swimming kit and a towel. Children are also allowed to bring a healthy snack and a bottle of water or a still drink.

     

  • Homework

    Homework is given out on a Friday and should be returned to school by Wednesday Morning. Spellings will also be given out and children will have to learn the spellings for their spellings test.

     

  • Planners

    Planners must be brought to school every day and signed by a parent or guardian at the end of the week, every week.

     

    The new planners also include a reading record. We expect children to read at least 3 times a week! Once you’ve listened to your child, make a comment and sign it. We will then add up all the comments. Let's see who can get all four Book Bucks!

     

    English

    This term in English, we will be looking at writing a biography of a famous person as well as writing formal persuasive texts.

     

    Maths

    This term in maths, we will be recapping our knowledge of fractions. We will be working out equivalent fractions, adding fractions with the same denominator and looking at decimal equivalents.

     

    IPC

    Our new IPC topic for this term is 'Explorers and Adventurers'. Read on to find out the different subjects we will be teaching:

     

    In History, we’ll be finding out:

    • About explorers and adventurers in the past

    • How to gather information from maps, pictures and books

    • How to answer simple questions about exploration

     

    In Art, we’ll be finding out:

    • About the artwork of explorer-artists

    • How to draw plants and animals with accuracy

     

    In Society, we’ll be finding out:

    • If we think exploration is a good thing

    • About conflict and exploration in the past

    • About female explorers in the past and today

     

    In Science, we’ll be finding out:

    • About magnetism and which metals are magnetic

    • How to make a compass

    • How sounds are made

     

    In International, we’ll be finding out:

    • How exploration has changed the world

    • Who owns the Moon and planets in space

This term in English, we will be looking at writing from a Historical Setting. We will be watching 'SpyWatch' to understand evacuees and the life of children in World War 2. We will be writing a variety of narratives such as diary entries, letters and persuasive texts. 

 

Moving on, we will also focus on poetry where we will learn a variety vocabulary to improve our writing. We will also act out our poems. Watch out. 

 

Maths

This term in maths, we will look at measurement. We will be measuring lengths and sizes using units of measure. We will also be measuring the area and perimeter of different shapes. Why not start practising measuring at home! 

 

IPC

Our new IPC topic for this term is 'Gateways to the World' where the main focus will be airports and travelling. Read on to find out the different subjects we will be teaching:

 

In Geography, we’ll be finding out:

  • About the connections we have with different places in the world
  • About the places that we can travel to from our local airport
  • About the jobs that people do in an airport
  • About the jobs people do on an airplane
  • How to plan an airport

  • How weather can affect air travel

 

In Art, we’ll be finding out:

  • About different airline logos and designs
  • How to create our own airline logo
  • How to create a sculpture to represent ‘flight’

 

In ICT, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to create our own airline tickets
  • How to create a check-in database
  • How to program our own airplane game

 

In Technology, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to plan and design an in-flight entertainment pack
  • How to make and evaluate an in-flight entertainment pack

 

In Society, we’ll be finding out:

  • About the jobs people do in an airport
  • About the jobs people do on an airplane

 

In International, we’ll be finding out:

  • About the use of passports and visas around the world

This term in Maths, we will be learning about Place Value which will include rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000, the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), etc. We will also be practising our timestable.

English

 

In English, we will be focusing on narrative writing and moving onto learning about advertising. We will be discussing character description, setting description and moving onto writing our own chapter of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. How exciting!

 

Linking with our IPC topic, our novel for this term will be Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.

Our topic in IPC this term is CHOCOLATE!

 

 

In history, we’ll be finding out:

·       Who first discovered chocolate

·       Who took the first chocolate to Europe

·       About the importance of cocoa beans for trade

 

In geography, we’ll be finding out:

·       Where cacao tees are found

·       About the factors affecting the growth of cacao tree

 

In science, we’ll be finding out:

·       About the ingredients in chocolate

·       If chocolate cause tooth decay

·       Why chocolate wrappers are made from special materials

·       What the melting point of chocolate is

 

In technology, we’ll be finding out:

·       How to make our own chocolate

·       What we can add to chocolate

In English, we have been looking at adverts. We identified lots of different features such as logos, slogans, appealing language and comparatives and superlatives.

 

In Maths, we studied co-ordinates and angles. We learnt that an acute angle must be less than 90º, a right angle is exactly 90º, no more no less and an obtuse angle is more than 90º but less than 180º. We use protractors to measure angles.

 

In topic we have moved onto learning about Benin, in West Africa. We have researched into their beliefs and understand much more about the way the Edo people lived. We have found that the head is the most important part of the body in their belief, as it was the most intelligent part due to the brain. 

 

 

Homework

 

Homework is given out and explained every Friday afternoon. The children must bring it into school the following Tuesday completed. If brought in early, children are rewarded accordinglyno

PE

 

PE now takes place on a Tuesday afternoon in Year 4. Children must bring their PE kit into school on Monday, at the start of the week, and then kept in school until after they have had their PE session. 

 

PE kit includes; black or navy blue joggers, plain white t-shirt, and the blue school jumper or cardigan. They must also wear suitable footwear e,g, trainers not football shoes.
